The Tree (08-03-2008)

An elm tree grew proud and tall
In a public garden, next to a wall.
It offered shade to passers-by,
When the sun was high in the sky.

A girl was walking one day nearby
With tears glistening in her eyes.
She sat down on the ground near the tree
And wept away for all the world to see.

She hugged the trunk and leaned against
Comforted by the roughness and the strength.
The tree looked down on her auburn head
And wished he could hug her instead.

So the girl went away after a while,
but returned whenever life was hostile.
The elm kept watching her from above
His wooden insides filled with love.

Yet one day the girl came with a boy
And both sat down, eyes filled with joy.
The tree was sad but understood
That after all, humans cant love wood.

So when you're there with a wooden heart,
Wake up and realise you need to start
To live and love, to run away free
Or else you will end up alone like the tree!
